An OGR Forumite has the named locomotive for sale on this board. I recall some discussion about the 0-8-0 and big vs. little motor. Can anyone say for certain which this locomotive has?

I think you would be ok.
I would second that. The small motor actually works surprising well. What actually limits the pulling power is the single traction tire. The wheels will slip before you can damage the motor but 5 cars, even die cast, should not be a problem.
