On last Thursday, Dotty and I flew to Ohio with Carl Chancey.  We met up with our friend Gerry Morlitz who drove from New York.   Upon arriving in Canfield we headed to the Lionel facility to say hello to Mike Reagan, Phil Hull and Brian Tusin.  While there, we met fellow forum member Roger Wasson.  We then headed to Mercer Junction train store to meet up with Dave Minarik.  Mercer Junction is one fantastic train store.  After closing for the day, Dave took us to his home to see his home layout.  Dave is also a custom motorcycle builder and musician.  Below are a few pix from the store and Daves home layout.

Below are a few pix of the most beautiful bikes ever built.  Dave hand built them.  The first pix is of myself and Gerry (sleazy rider) Morlitz.

few weeks ago at the home of Alex Malliae with Mike Reagan, I told Mike I would love to have his old Train America sign for my train room.  I first went to his old headquarters last year with him and always admired the sign.  He told me to bring some tools to the Lionel open house and he would be happy to give it to me as long as it did not end up on ebay.  This past Friday morning, I met Mike at the Lionel building and he sent Brian Tusin with me to score the sign.  After getting the sign, I took it back to Lionel and he signed it along with Phil Hull, Brian Tusin and Stephen Pennline.  All these men worked for Mike at Train America.

After having the boys sign my new sign, we grabbed Roger Wasson and headed to visit a very talked about layout in Ohio that was owned and built by Jeff James.  Upon walking into the train room, we were all blown away by this beautiful layout that models the Ohio steel hauling railroads.  Jeff had several hand made custom buildings that represented steel mills and related buildings.  He had all the correct rolling stock to go with the atmosphere.  The layout is Legacy and DCS and I rate it one of the best I have ever seen.  Please enjoy the pictures below and thank you Jeff for the invite.

On Friday we went back to the hotel and met up with Alan Arnold the new OGR Ad Man.   Known to all as leavingtracks.  A great guy and great addition to the OGR staff.  Many of us were invited to a cook out Mike Reagan and Phil Hull were throwing at the Lionel facility.  Present were all the Lionel employees including Howard Hitchcock.  All the OGR staff were present.  Jim, Rich, Ed, Allan and Alan.  Captain John Xenides, Gerry Morlitz, Tom Nuzzo and several others were present.  Hot dogs and beverages of choice were served.  Great time and thanks again Mike and Phil.

Time for the big event.  The open house the Lionel guys conducted was second to none.  Several operating layouts and deals for the public that made the trip worth the price of gas.  Mike, Phil and the staff pulled off one for the books.  I was an Lionel Employee for the day doing security at the register.  Dotty did the same keeping the shelves stocked for the public.  Not one incident.  Great people and many forum guys to meet.

Great freight cars with die cast trucks for $12.00.  I loaded up on those and several PRR N5C cabooses.

Mike and Captain John.

Jeff James and Alan Arnold.

Marty E having a great time.

After the days work was done and everyone went home to enjoy the big scores they made today, Mike and Phil took everyone who worked the event out for a great meal.  Great hobby, great friends and good times.  Thank you Mike and Phil.

Kind of easy to see why Dave is my not-quite-local local dealer.  The store is great, but the owner is even greater.

And it's always a pleasure to see and chat with Marty and Dotty--two great ambassadors for our hobby.  I met forum member Roger Wasson for the first time in Canfield...another true gentleman and credit to the hobby.  Roger is a close friend of Vernon Hart, whose layout is featured on the cover of our October issue, and he's going to provide some leads to other great layouts we can feature.  Marty is also doing the same with layouts in his neck of the woods.  There are many fine layouts yet to be discovered!

I was talking to Marty earlier today on the phone, and he was telling me about this trip. As he was telling me everything they did, I just kept saying wow. Now seeing all the photo's I can see why. Boy did I miss a great time, Marty I should have went with you guys. I will definitely attend next year.

Dave your layout's are awesome, and the bikes are beautiful !!!!!!!!!

Marty and Gerry look so natural on your bikes. LOL LOL

Marty thanks for posting the pictures

It was a real pleasure to share my layout with the following people over this past weekend: Carl Chancey, Gerry Morlitz, Roger Wasson, Dotty Perry, & Marty Fitzhenry. I hope all had a good time, I know I did. I have to pass along credit to my good friend & scratch builder "John" who was not able to attend the open house due to his work schedule. Most of the scratch built structures on the layout are his creations. Debbie and myself look forward to seeing all of you again in January 2014 in NJ.

Jeff

Marty.....You did a great job report the event and posting the great pictures above!  This was a fantastic event that was well planned and executed by Mike and Phil and the entire Lionel service staff....all of these guys and gals in the service department worked hard and long hours to make this a success....and WOW was it a BIG SUCCESS!

I missed getting to go to Jeff's and Dave's layouts because of my schedule but I am sure I will get to see them in person sometime in the future.  Those pictures show how beautiful both layouts are...!

I enjoyed meeting those of you that I had a chance to see and talk to and hope to see more of you at the up coming fall York.

What an incredible event and opportunity to meet some of the nicest folks on the planet....thanks Lionel and to everyone that helped make this a memorable occasion!

Alan

Marty, that was a great summary. It truly was an awesome experience.

Thank you SO MUCH, Mike Reagan, Dave Minarik and Jeff James for the hospitality you extended. Dave and Jeff opened their homes for us and showed us every hospitality. Mike was the gracious host, having us to a barbeque on Friday and dinner on Saturday. You guys made the trip into an absolutely wonderful experience.

Aside from dropping a bunch of money at Lionel, the time spent with Marty, Dotty, Carl, the Lionel folks who went way out of their way to get my money and make it a great event (Mike, Phil, Brian, Tom, Dean and others), Captain John, Roger, Brian, Marty E, the OGR crew (including Rich, Jim, Allan, Ed and Alan), and so many others was great. So many shared experiences and stories to tell. And so much wondering about what the future will be. Just a great time.

BTW, Ben, you better be careful. Jeff James has an awful lot of Erie Lackawanna trains.

In summation, it was a wonderful time and truly great to meet some new, really nice train people.

Gerry

I too have to congratulate Mike Reagan and all of the folks at Lionel for putting on a first class open house for all of us who were fortunate enough to be their guests - a sincere THANK YOU to all.  Mr Reagan, you sir have outdone yourself once again!!!

I brought a dear friend of over 50 years - Larry Rector whose father WAS one of the 'drivers' of the real PRR #1361 with me this year.  Larry thoroughly enjoyed himself trying to absorb everything he saw and heard from MANY wonderful Lionel employees who went out of their way to make him feel at home.  Larry specifically asked that I pass along his appreciation for the warm reception he received on Saturday.

Marty, it was so nice seeing you once again and thank you for taking the time during your busy schedule to prepare and share all of the neat photos and wonderful write-up about this 'not to be missed' event... are you listening Alex Malliae?????

I would be remiss in not mentioning the fact that on Saturday afternoon, Larry and I took a little side trip to visit Dave Minarik at Mercer Junction.  What a gracious host!!!  Dave took the time to show Larry around and answer all of his questions.  On the trip home, Larry couldn't say enough about how nice Dave was, how unique his train store was and the tremendious collection of 'what had to be very expensive locomotives' that Dave had available for sale.

Mike, when you have the opportunity to gather all of the fine folks together at your 'old place of business', please offer each and every one of them my heart-felt THANK YOU for all of their efforts last Saturday.  I'm sure all who attended feel exactly the same way!!!

Best,

Dave

Marty,

It was great having you guys over.  Meeting and making new friends is one of the reasons I love this hobby.  I still have to get that Allan Miller guy out to the house to see the layout.

Dave,

I wish I knew that Larry's father was an engineer on the 1361.  I was just in Altoona last week and took photos of every little part of the engine that I could.  It was great meeting you and Larry!

As I said in the 'Open House' thread, Mike has done great things for Lionel Service and I expect that he will do even greater things at Lionel in the future.  Thank you Mike!  We are all supporting you!

Dave

Marty,

Really great report.  Sure you don't want to write for us?

Dotty, thanks for the advice about the Polar Express cars, your counsel saved me some money.

Mike Reagan, Phil hull and the rest of the Lionel Service crew did a super job. What a memorable event!

We at OGR were honored to be part of the Open House.  I am glad so many of you got to meet Alan Arnold, our new Advertising Sales Manager.

Thanks to all who said such nice things about the Editorial product Allan Miller and contributors bring to our readers with each new issue.

The LCCA did a fine job at their table and we all enjoyed seeing the new LionChief control system in action on the LCCA inspired modular layout.   It was fun watching several 4 year olds grab the LionChief hand held and just use it without any direction.  Gee, I didn't know my Thomas the Tank engine could go that fast!

What a fun day.

Ed Boyle

Ed, thank you.  I have submitted 3 feature articles to you over the years and you printed them word for word.  I had a lot of years being the author of thousands of Police reports that had to stand up in court.  Anything I have ever done or posted has been to the best of my ability.  Train people are special to me and I always try to share anything I can put into words.

Tom,

Glad to hear everything is good with the family!! I had a eye out for some of the PA guys this past weekend at Lionel's open house. I was going to give Sam a call this evening and see if he wanted to get the guys together for another visit before I start evening classes here in a few weeks. You are more than welcome to come along if we can get something setup!

Jeff

Marty, and Dotty. Thanks so much for the pictures and this info on our trip. I got to share this post with my family, as they are not on the forum. Now they see why we went.

It was great to meet all of the folks and to go with Marty, Dotty, Carl C., and Gerry M. to Jeff James layout. I had a great time on the ride there and back with this bunch. And Jeff James layout is fantastic. If any of you are in his area, you need to give him a call to see his layout.

Thanks to Phil, Mike, Brian, Dean, Steve and all of the Lionel gang that put up with me from Thursday until Saturday afternoon. I really envy you all that live back east that have so many great layouts to see. You all are the inspiration that helps us in the mid-west.

I got to meet the staff of the OGR magazine Friday night, one top notch bunch of folks.

Also, thanks to Alan Arnold for putting up with me for 900 miles both ways. We talked all the way there and back about our new friends and this great hobby.

Looks like a great time was had while I basked in the sun on vacation with a cocktail.  I do have some questions and observations from the pics

Dave - Do they really race Cadillacs?  I believe you would lose

Gerry - You have to raise the kickstand but you do have good taste in shirts.

Tom - Chew with your mouth closed

Carl - Was the phonecall to check to see if the boxes will fit in the basement?

Marty - How the heck did you get one of those spiffy Lionel shirts?

Credit is King   Not too many on the cash line

Either Mike R shrunk or the Captain is growing a beanstalk

Alan - Whats with that company they can't spring for one of those nice OGR shirts for you.

The LCCA is definitely #1   A class act

Marty - Stop playing pocket pool

Popeye - The muscle is supposed to be on the top

Jeff - How can you like the EL with all that Santa Fe crap in the way

Looks like it was a great time, wish I could have made it this year. Well, hopefully next year.  I would love to be able to meet and talk with all of those guys, it is like the 'Who's Who' of the O gauge train world.

I'm heading to Mercer Junction tomorrow for my first visit!

Was attending a reunion of my USMC boot camp platoon in Va. We had 12 guys show up!  It's been 47 years, could not miss that.

May I make one correction in your recap above?  The OGR table was manned by me, Alan Arnold, Ed Boyle, and Allan Miller.  Rich was not present on Saturday as he had family visiting for the weekend thus was at the barbeque Friday evening.  See...you already forgot me!!...

Alan

Alan,  I stand corrected.  I spoke with Rich on Friday evening extensively. Sorry for the  for the mistake.  I can never forget you Alan  (correct Spelling) Arnold!
