When repairing these PW units, I see the air piston going up and down in the cylinder below the smoke pot that has the resistor.  There is a hole in both that aligns to let air get forced from the piston to the smoke pot (chamber) and push the smoke out the smokestack.  A gasket is between the smoke unit and the engine boiler.  These communicating holes are what usually needs to be cleaned when repairing these units.

There is a air gap between the piston unit and the smoke chamber so the 2 communicating holes are not sealed.

Should there be one?  I cant find any part like that in the repair manual.  Would adding one improve the smoke output?  It seems this gap would be a leak path for the air.  But maybe its also there to provide an intake for air.

Thoughts?
