Lionel S-2: Running Characteristics

Hey folks,

I've read other posts where Malcolm and David successfully converted Lionel's Alco S-2 switcher to 2R. I have a couple of questions about the Lionel unit:

Is the stock Lionel single motor drive on par with Atlas' single motor SW8/9 (for slow speed switching)? I'm trying to decide whether to convert a powered Lionel unit or to buy a nonpowered engine and place a Weaver/P&D drive with a large bottom sprocket underneath. I'm not sure if the Lionel blount truck sideframes are compatable with a Weaver drive though?
Is the cab "open" so that a full interior can be added?

Maybe I should just try to hunt down a brass Car Works unit:-)

Any advice is much appreciated.

Jack,

I have 2railed 2 of these and the Lionel center mount motor transmissions work great. The side frames will not work with the Weaver components. The cab open for detailing.
