Lionel Santa Fe

Hello,

I have been putting together my first passenger train using the Lionel 6-82290 Santa Fe FT AA Lion Chief Plus traditional O gauge with Warbonnet paint. I am waiting for the 6-15312 Lionel Santa Fe Super Chief Aluminum Streamlined Passenger 4-Pack that I am purchasing from a private party across the states. (He may be on this forum, which I just joined.) These passenger cars do not have any red stripes. My understanding is that they have painted interiors with actual figures. I will be including a US Mail car and the silver version of the Pacific Fruit Express ice car.

Four questions:

1) Sources?    I am looking for the rare add-on 2-pack set, Lionel 6-29152, which I believe contains Palm Arch 6-29153, and Regal Arms 6-29154. Where might I look online for this 2003 set?

2) Diner?      What is there to consider for a Lionel traditional O gauge aluminum, 15" or less, dining car that would be a match, or at least blend well? Since these 15" Super Chief aluminum passenger cars are supposed to have actual figures, I am reluctant to use a silhouette type of diner, but that seems to be all there is that is close. Any suggestions? 

3) Tank car?   Would it be completely out of place to include the generic Santa Fe red tank car on my passenger train? I have not seen tank cars on the actual Santa Fe diesel passenger trains on YouTube, but I have heard of trains carrying water to dry areas. 

3) Wise or waste?  Also, there is a Santa Fe Lion Chief Plus FT powered b unit Lionel 6-82302 that is available to go with my AA. I do not need the power right now, but thought it might be wise to pick one up while they are still pretty easy to find online. My local Lionel dealer said they did not even order one to keep in the store because the individual b units have such a specific market they can be hard to sell. Opinions from the experienced?

I don't have space to do any of this in a big way, but I love trains!

I will put in my 2 cents worth as I'm a huge Santa Fe Super Chief fan.

As for a 15" SS diner, I only know of two:

  1. The 15" silver / red stripes one that matches the celebration set (6-25449), however it does have black trucks and silhouettes (I do love the conductor audio on this one as he does reference the train as the "Super Chief"
  2. The 15" silver one that came with the 50th Anniversary set ( 6-21786) this one has actual figures and silver trucks
  • The first one you should be able to find, the second one probably not possible unless you buy the set or find someone that wants to break it up

 

Tank Car - I think it would pretty cool, especially if you can find the warbonnet one.

Get the B-unit, I think it completes the set and you won't have to hunt one down later.

Hi BNSF Matt,

Thank you for the information and the wish for good luck!  I may have to compromise in order to have a Santa Fe diner with my 6-15312 aluminum passenger cars, but I am trying to avoid the red stripes. I really like the Lionel dome diners in the standard O scale. I wish I could get one of those in traditional O scale in a 15" aluminum SF car.

It sounds like my urge to buy that Lionel Warbonnet FT Lion Chief B unit might be a good hunch, even if I do not need it right now. I would hate to be kicking myself later trying to find it to go with my AA set.

I had been tempted to get the Warbonnet reefer car, but I could not find any photos of a real life one, so I called a museum that was supposed to know the history of the Warbonnet. The museum "expert" told me Santa Fe never had a Warbonnet reefer. I wonder if that is true about the tank cars, too, since I have not seen any in pictures of the real trains. I love this Warbonnet stuff, but I want my passenger set to closely resemble the real Santa Fe Warbonnet pulled trains. On the other hand, it might be entertaining to run my passenger train with my hazardous waste and my radioactive materials tank cars. 

It's good to know there are other Santa Fe enthusiasts here.

Hi Grampstrains,

That's a good point about the powered B unit making it easier to pull the train with less strain on the engine. This B unit is on sale right now several places. I think it retails for $279, and lately, I have seen it as low as $239, but I have to compare the shipping, too. 

I can see your point about the water tank and the engine not being a steam engine. I imagine passenger trains had plenty of hidden places to store the water the passengers used.
