Hey fellas,

I'm filming a review for Lionel's new Conrail Big Blue freight set, which contains the new 86' hi-cube cars equipped with the scale coupler mounting pads.

With most other manufacturers (MTH, Atlas, Weaver, etc) they usually just put the mounting holes under the car and then leave the rest to you. So for me that simply means buying a Kadee coupler pack and installing them at the proper height.  I think MTH packages a spacer piece to help out with the height, but it's fairly self-explanatory.

Lionel, however, has packaged some strange extra pieces to be used in adding scale couplers and I have no clue what to make of them.

In the pictures below you can see that I've installed the coupler box that Lionel supplies...but they don't supply a coupler (?)...so what's the point? Am I supposed to use their gear and then buy a coupler on my own? That seems strange, so my instinct is to just ignore the extra parts and install a Kadee coupler in the normal way that I'd install them on any other car.

It doesn't help that Lionel didn't package any instructions with the 86' hi-cube cars. Maybe it's really simple and I'm just over-thinking it?

Does anyone know what the story is with this extra hardware and what one needs to do to properly use it? I'd appreciate it if someone could clear this up.

Just like the MTH scale wheel engines, you must supply your own coupler. For those cars, you need the extended shank Kadee #746. You also need to use those Lionel supplied draft gear boxes as it allows maximum swing for those long cars. If you use a standard Kadee draft gear box, the cars won't handle the curves unless they are huge.

There should be a draft gear box, and a spacer. I didn't use the spacer as the coupler height was correct without it.

As usual LOS is spot on!  I appreciated the included gear box because without it (more specifically its flared end) I would not have been able to put kadees on these cars.  That flared end allows for a lot more side to side travel for the coupler arm.  LOS has great vids on his you tube channel about modifying the kadee draft gear box, but I don't think even with those mods I could run these cars.
