I jut got back a warranty repaired Lionel Legacy single A unit Centipede. The problems were extremely noisy roof fans and wobbly drivers. The unit was shipped in its original shipping boxes.
Lionel received and repaired the unit in one day and sent it back, great quick service. the included note stated that the roof fans are not noisy and that is how they will always be. The Tech did lubricate the gears and replaced the traction tires and included some extra tires too, Thanks a lot. He tested it for four hours as mentioned in the note and found no issues.
I got the loco and checked it out. The "wobbly" tires are gone, great. One loose extra traction tire fell out of the front drivers set, it was just stuck in there. that's ok, it did not jam anything since I caught it before running the loco. But the roof fans are still very noisy at any speed, they can be heard over the engine sounds. I run my engines in the early morning and late at night, so I have to turn the sounds off. These roof fans are way too noisy if sounds are off or on, I just can't run it this way.
Also, when running forward, the loco jumps like it is trying to do a wheelie, really, the front ends jumps a bit then it moves forward and then it runs ok. Reverse is fine, no jumping...Never did that before!
Upon opening the box, the foam cradle had been crushed near the nose area even though the outside box looks ok. This indicates that the brown box was dropped on its flat end and caused the foam cradle damage. there is a scratch on the paint. One of the widows is broken or loose, one of the crew seats is loose. I do not want to open it till I discuss with Lionel next week. I have filed a damage report with UPS.
There are a couple of scratches near the 9V battery hatch and on top at the rear that were not there when sent. They may have happened during the shipping back to Lionel. When I received it, the hatches were in separate bags this time. I think it was a good idea to ship them this way.
I am satisfied with Lionel service so far but I still think the fans need replacement. Why, I have another Centipede unit, different road name and the fans are so quiet I can run this unit w/o sound any time.... . I will discuss with Lionel next week.
This is "EXACTLY" why I do not like to send for repairs unless they are major ones. I DID ask Lionel to send me a roof fan unit and I'd send the old one back, but they lady, who was very nice and polite indeed, said no. the unit had to be sent back to the service dpt.
So now I hope I will not be stuck between Lionel and UPS and/or out of a unit, OR worse yet, have to just keep it as is, in a worse condition than when it was sent in, in fear of further damage if I have to send it again....What to do?
Let's not turn this into any drama...I am just sharing with you my experiences...enjoy!
Foam damage!
Extra traction tire fell out, thx, I can use it for my other Lionel locos
This is the worst damage!
Window loose or broken!
Interior flying everywhere! I do not know where the side window is, can't see it w/o opening the shell and I ain't doing it now.
Ahh, the joys of O scale...
