Lionel Starter Sets...

Does anyone have a vague idea if Lionel sells more starter sets now than they did in the late 70s?? I realize the trains now are far superior...but the Fundimensions Lionel still had that "mass market" toy appeal. That's why I am drawn to it. Just curious on the opinions here.
