my suggestion would be to tie a OTS resettable circuit breaker from any transformer you may attach, to the layout itself, regardless if the transformer may claim to have internal protection.  remember an amp is an amp regardless of voltage, so an 8-10 amp breaker (the maximum rating i'd personally use) that may be designed for 110vac will work just fine.  and if you do not necessarily trust circuit breakers, fast blowing fuses aren't that expensive.
