Other than the Centipedes, I have never been disappointed by a Vision Line locomotive. The market will shake out everything and everyone. There is no risk in BTO if you do not order. In many cases, even if you do order, the dealers will often let you cancel. I wish I had my GEVO back. I should never have sold it.

My prediction: The GG-1 will be well received and will merit the price Lionel asks. I just wish they had done a steamer. C'est la vie . . .

Now, about building catenary . . . . I will go to the Fitzhenry School and take classes !!

I don't doubt it, Eliot.  I have a couple of Vision Line locos, and they're very nice.  I just think there's a tremendous price premium one pays when purchasing Vision Line models when they first hit the street, which I often don't think is worth the "premium" when other alternatives can be found in the marketplace.

In this particular case, I'm drawn more to the bicentennial paint scheme itself rather than being overly enamored with Vision Line branding/features.  So if a less expensive alternative exists now or in the near-term future for a product with similar features, I'm fine with that.

IMO, let the manufacturer set the price at what the market will bear. $2K seems beyond the bearable point, but soon we'll know.

I have my own ceiling price point for specific locomotive types:

  • B-B diesels $500 per powered unit.
  • C-C diesels $550 per powered unit.
  • D-D diesels $600 per powered unit.
  • Electrics and larger unique diesels $1000 per unit
  • Small steam $700
  • Large (non-articulated) steam $1,200
  • Articulated steam $1,600

Sure the extra's of Vision Line has it's draw. I would consider adding an additional $100 to $200 for those extras.

Since I don't model the northeastern railroads, I won't be in the market for a GG1, so, specifically, my input is of little to no value.

David,  If you want the Bicentennial model, contact DavidOne as he had one (MTH?) awhile back that he was trying to sell on the FS board.

Thanks for the tip Sam.  But earlier today I contacted a train shop that had an MTH bicentennial GG-1's (PS2 version) NIB for a fair price, and it's already on its way to me... due tomorrow.  Even though it's brand new, I'll probably replace the original battery with a BCR2... which I think even I can handle without doing any damage.

So for now, it appears I'll be able to safely watch the Lionel Vision Line GG-1 pricing drama unfold from the sidelines sans the temptation and pricing head games inherent with each new catalog!

Let's see... which model would you buy?  An existing JLC GG-1 at $450-$550?

David

THIS is an "existing JLC GG-1?"

And, they are available sometimes?

And, the below photo depicts the ones that were made?

( I still hate the new Lionel website)

Thanks, Matt

Someone at another website gave me this TRAINZ COM LINK to learn about the different Lionel GG1 models. I hope the info is correct. All the talk of the upcoming VL GG1 has sparked my interest in these very cool engines.

I just got done with my price sheets and will post them when allowed. There are some very nice items at decent prices and then some at a crazy retail. I will divulge that there is a Allegheny with a retail of $2199.99 and the Vision line GG1s with a retail at $1399.99.

Dammit that means the allegheny will be 1900 like the Bigboy I was hopping it be around 1600

Well, maybe not that high...the Bigboy carried a 2699.99 retail. Street price could possibly be lower (let's hope).

Probably not VL tiered at $2199.99....I'd presume standard O line.
