This is a big deal, THANK YOU LIONEL. While reading the York Grandstand Minutes, Spring 2012 Edition, I noticed that Mike Reagan stated Lionel will prepay Warranty freight charges for veterens. Just wanted everyone to be aware of this as it is very handy when they e-mail you a call tag you can attach to your package for free shipping to Lionel. Thanks again Lionel.I would also like all veterens to know when you shop Lowe's they also have an extra 10% discount policy on all purchases when you check out at the register, I know it comes in handy for me especially last month when I purchased a major appliance there. You need to have proof of service when you check out. Thank you Lowes. In this economy every thing helps. Regards, Casey

Guys

Just how do you prove your a veteran to the cashiers. One a while back actually seen my Marine Corp cover and asked me if I was a veteran and I said yes, and she discounted my purchase?? Caught me off guard. (Home Depo)

I still remember all the insults very well as though they happened yesterday.  One smart a** female even asked me if I had killed any babies that day.  I told her; "No!  But in your case, I'll be glad to make an exception."

I had been retired from active duty for 20 years before any one ever thanked me for my service or welcomed me home (other than my family and close friends).

So, to all who are still serving, thanks from one vet to another.  And to those who have recently come back; Welcome Home.

Thanks, Lionel!  A very generous policy on your part.

Ohio veterans are afforded the opportunity to have their veteran status imprinted right on their driver's licenses, which makes proof of status convenient and easy.  You have to produce some paperwork when you apply for your license (DD214 or similar) which they verify, and then an "Armed Forces" designation is imprinted in the lower right corner, next to your organ donor status (if applicable).

I don't hold any grudges against those who treated us Vietnam veterans poorly when we returned home, but am just very glad that today's service men and women are accorded a far more pleasant welcome.

As usual, the few spoil it for the rest.  Here in Frederick, Md., people were lending out their DD214's to others and getting the discounts, so Lowes and Home Depot will no longer accept the DD214.  Go to your veterans affairs office and get an I.D. card.  Even though I don't own any Lionel engines, thank you Mike for your kind gesture.  It puts me one step closer to bringing home some orange and blue boxes.

I guess I was guilty by association, because when I returned from Thailand in '67, I got the same cold treatment, as if I was in Vietnam.  Allan's last paragraph says it well, though.

FRANKFORD JUNCTION, AND ALL OTHERS NEEDING A COPY OF THEIR DD 214, EVERY VA OFFICE,CLINIC,OR HOSPITAL HAS A VETERANS ADVOCATE WHO CAN DOWNLOAD A COPY FOR YOU,AT NO CHARGE,ALSO ALL DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS SERVICE CENTERS,V.F.W. POSTS,AMERICAN LEGION POSTS,CAN ASSIST YOU.ALL THE ABOVE WILL ASSIST YOU WHETHER YOU ARE DISABLED,COMBAT VET, NON-COMBAT VET OR NATIONAL GUARD MEMBER.

This has been a very rewarding post for me, especially to see all you veterans jump in and try to help each other out. When it comes to helping each other, all US military branches are the same. Thank you veterans past and present. I myself have been carrying my (naval Airdale) discharge ID card in my wallet for 50 years, this year. All of the above suggestions about DD-214 and VA cards etc. will work, they never give me any problem when I check out and usually thank me for my service. If possible I try to use the Customer Service checkout register, that way a regular cashier does not need to call over a supervisor for approval. (not that it is a big deal). So thanks again folks ya made my Day. Thank you LIONEL, Thank you LOWES and Thank you HOME DEPOT, Thanks to all who try to help our Veterans in any way and show them the respect they deserve. Regards, Casey.

Guys,

At the OGR Grandstand Meeting, Mike Reagan made it clear that this Lionel policy is instituted under the honor system.  No DD-214s required!  After having all the veterans in attendance identify themselves, he jokingly added that if anybody cheats, he would have all the vets "kick their a**es"!  It got a good laugh, but everybody got the message.

Glad to know that Home Depot and Lowe's give discounts to military vets too.  I didn't know that, so will take advantage of it in the future.

Again, thanks to all our fellow veterans who served our great country in uniform.

I don't know about your state, but I just called the VA here in TN and I need to go to to the local VA Hosp (Janes H. Quillen) and bring my DD 214. I also called the Drivers License Office and they were not aware of any law in reference to Veteran information being placed on a drivers license. However, I pulled up the bill that was signed by the governor last year implementing that procedure. My best guess...funds were not allocated for implementing the procedure.

Thanks lionel, home depot and lowe's. This post is just in time. This weekend I'm set to buy material for a new shed. I wonder if they'll accept my DAV card? Former Army paratrooper that had a night jump go a little sideways. I'll bring my 214 with me just in case. I don't like carrying it around because my SSN is on it. Had my personal ID ripped off before. I wouldn't recommend that experience to a friend.

Made the mistake of wearing my class A's through Washington National Airport (now Reagan) in 1973. Wasn't spit on but did get called a baby killer by two pretty young girls. I just smiled and walked on. Fortunately neither was a mind reader. I'm just glad the young men and women today are being treated with a little respect for their sacrifices.

GUNRUNNER YOU ANSWERED YOUR OWN QUESTION,THEY HAVE TO PUT YOUR BEAUTIFUL PICTURE ON YOUR CARD.I JUST RETURNED 10 MINS AGO FROM LOWES, ANOTHER $30.00 MILITARY DISCOUNT,IT WILL HOPEFULLY SPREAD. I GIVE ALL MY VET CUSTOMERS A 15% DISCOUNT IN MY SPEEDY LUBE SHOPS AND KNOW IT HELPS THEM GREATLY,THIS IS WHAT THE CARD LOOKS LIKE, THE DAV CARD,AND OTHERS WORK DOWN HERE IN TEXAS.

My father( Lt. Army) and my uncle came home from Korea and said other than grand ma and grand dad nobody knew they were gone. My uncle served 4 years as a fighter pilot in the Navy in WW2 (Corsair) and got the proud displeasure of being called back for Korea.
There was nothing going on in the world(Air Force 78-82) and  when I got home  I don't think other than mom and dad anyone knew I'd been gone.
Dad was a very humble guy and he put it to me this way,he said the G.I bill is nice but it's a honor to serve and something to be proud of all your life, he always believed that, so much so his grave only has his military marker on it.
He said that's all he wanted.
Thanks to all those who've served the honor is truly yours.

David

IF ANYTHING WERE TO HAPPEN TO MY WIFE, I CAN SEE THE NECESSITY OF MOVING INTO THE VETS HOME HERE IN MCALLEN,I ,LIKE SO MANY OF THE FORUM MEMBERS SERVED IN THE NAVY (9 YEARS) AND UNFORTUNATELY HURT MY SPINE IN 1972, AS WITH MOST OF OUR GENERATION , I DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE VA BENEFITS,COME TO FIND I ALSO HAVE PTSD, THE MEDS ARE FABULOUS,BUT LIVING ALONE IS NOT AN OPTION,I MUST CHECK AND SEE IF THERE ARE ANY MODEL RAILROADERS IN THE HOME, WHAT AN IDEA YOU HAVE GIVEN ME,THANKS,ROY
