I picked up 2 Lionmaster Challengers yesterday.  Western Maryland and Rio Grande.  They look great and really look nice on 072 curves.  Here are some pics and also a link to a quick video.  The sounds are great, almost a Big Boy type whistle.  You can see in the pics and video how it compares to my scale NKP Berkshire in size.  You really cannot notice any difference and scale rolling stock looks fine begin these.  The Big Boy is so ugly on 072 curves I got rid of mine.  At 869.00 these are great for a Legacy Engine and all the features.

As a side note, the WM one has a smoke unit issue.  It works fine when moving, but at standstill the fan shuts off.  So it goes back tomorrow for a new one.

They do not have cab lights in them for whatever reason.

I heard Pre-Orders were vey low so not sure if we will see these again.  Its too bad because these are great models.

Here is a link to the video.

It sounds nice! I think I will pick one up.

As talked about in another thread, the LM Challenger, nice as it is, is hardly cheap and is definitely much smaller than a 1:48 Challenger.

I like them, and they have a real place, but, to be clear and accurate, for those who may be considering one, they are not "O-scale". Great loco, but decisions need clarity.

Mark me down as another fan of the LM versions. While much of my stuff is scale, I just don't have the "track mileage" to make the big scale steamers look right. Wide, sweeping curves are not the issue - I have those; it's putting those big curves together with really long straight runs that I can't achieve. The LM versions are good size compromises - albeit not cheap, as pointed out - and look fine in amongst the rest of my scale trains.

The scale Challengers are nice, but at 32" long, they're enormous (as is their cost)! I don't have curves or straights to support such a monster, nor do any of my railroading friends, here in the land without basements. The Lionmaster version has been great; I'd love to see Lionel do other Lionmaster steamers - the J and GS-4 come to mind, as does a redo of the Hudson with the addition of Legacy.
