Hi everyone,

Some time ago, someone posted a list of the protosound locos that were, for lack of a better term, more problematic than other PS-1 locos.

I just bought a loco that refuses to run on my TPC-powered layout, but it will run with a conventional transformer. All of my other PS-1 locos run fine on my layout. In addition, the make/force chip did not solve the problem. So, I am wondering if this loco is on the list.

I tried to look for the posting, but I cannot seem to find the search function on the forum.

Can anyone assist me please, or am I just lost?

Thanks.

The List, is engines that can have an ID conflict with a weak battery.  After the issue comes up, they do not run.   Your issue is older engines that only run on Pure AC.  That is mostly hardware.  Nothing you really can do about it with out changing boards and getting a new chip to go with it.  G

I can't remember the exact scenario as it's been a long time. Before command control was around. I ran my trains with an Al Trol memory throttle using a ZW for power set at around 18v.  I had installed QSI   sound in a couple of steamers. I don't think I had any issues.  I then purchased a very early MTH Proto 1. It was an early small diesel. It was the working coil couplers that got me. At the time it was the coolest feature I had ever seen. It would not come out of reset as mentioned above. The fix at the time was to use a center off heavy duty toggle switch or an off, on with a relay. Use the ZW to power the engine up in neutral. With the Al Trol throttle set at zero. You would cycle the toggle switch to switch throttles and then you were good to go. This all worked till you powered down the layout. Then you had to go through this sequence again.

I did a similar thing in the old days by putting a big capacitor across the output of my old powermaster. The loco ran, but the noises the powermaster made were scary. It was designed for an inductive load and a capacitive load freaked it out.
