I am expanding my layout and will be adding two additional tiu's to the system. Currently my control panel resides atop a bathroom sink vanity with the electrical components inside the cabinet. The TIU is flat on the bottom of the cabinet about 3 inches off the floor. Since I will be doing some rewiring, If there is a prefered placement either vertical or horizontal and if distance from the floor or above the layout level is critical, now is the time for me to make that change. I use TMCC interfaced with it. Any INPUT would be appreciated from those who have experimented with this.

From The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition, page 62:

TIU Channel Assignment and Placement

There are two schools of thought as regards TIU placement and, depending upon which one you use during layout construction, there will be an impact on the length of the wire runs from the transformers to the TIUs, from the TIUs to the terminal blocks, and from the terminal blocks to the tracks. Regardless of which method of TIU placement is used, it's a good idea to locate TIUs so that there is a direct line of sight between the TIUs and the DCS Remote whenever possible. This is best accomplished by physically placing TIUs so that they are at, or above, the height of the tracks whenever possible.
