I have a 4-8-2 L-3 Mohawk Steam Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0 product # 30-1165-1.

Locomotive was running fine,  turned it off to let her rest,  came back later to fire it up and is dead.  Headlights work, but that’s all.  Just sits there and stares at you.  What boards are bad and where can I get a replacement?

Thanks,

Blake

Well, I checked the model, and I have some potentially bad news. From the product page...

Delivery Status: Delivered JUL. 2000

This means it has the older 5V board, and they're pretty infamous for dying a sudden death for no apparent reason.  First step is to do some diagnostics and see if there's a possibility of reviving it.  Not much that can make them just stop like that in conventional mode.

Hey John,

I kinda figured that it would be a bad board.  Just wondering where I could get a replacement for that model.

There is a universal replacement board for the PS/2 boards, the PS32 board.  It's only sold direct to techs, but it exists.  You have to replace the board set and also the speaker as the old one is 16 ohms, the PS3 boards are 4 ohms.  Mounting the board may take some creativity, this is a locomotive that has the board in the locomotive, the PS32 board and carrier are a bit larger than the PS/2 5V board set.

Looks like there is very little room in the tender for either a PS2 or PS3 upgrade board including the speaker.  Your best bet, since this is a RailKing locomotive is to sell it as is and purchase a new one.  Also - read the instructions - a CW-80 is not suitable for operation of Proto Sound locomotives.  Purchase a transformer that is recommended in the locomotive instruction manual to avoid conflict and possible damage or malfunctions to the boards.
