Greetings all,
I started having trouble with a steam locomotive. It chugs along then speeds up without Proto-Sound then hits the brakes, then chugs along etc. etc.
Thoughts, suggestions?
Thanks all!

Item number? Transformer used?
MTH 2-8-8-2 Imperial USRA Steam Engine w/Proto-Sound 2.0. ( 30-1452-1 ).
ZController, Z1000 power supply
I would try a conventional reset.

I dont know that engine, or if they used them, but if that doesn't work, it also sounds similar to a rpm read wheel issue. (Black/white stipes or wheel with holes read by an opto, wipe the tape clean/ inspect for a "dust bunny"/blow clean as a start)
I did a conventional reset, which loco acknowleged. The problem is still present.
It was late when this problem started so I plan on looking for other reasons causing the problem today.
Thanks for your inputs everyone, it's much appreciated.

Tach reader issue that could be a bad harness connection, partially broken internal tether wire. Loose 7 pin connector on board, dirty tach tape, too large a gap on the tach reader, tach reader becoming faulty, broken solder joint on engine side PCB that tether plugs into. Does this occur on curves mostly? If so tether or PCB most likely culprits. G
GGG,
The loco speed up, along with no Proto-Sound seems to happen on the straight-aways. Then, the loco hits the brakes, starts chugging again and then speeds up again with no Proto-Sound on the strait-away and so on.
