Hello friends.  With lockdown still in-effect, I'm looking at cleaning up and giving some TLC to my collection in anticipation of getting my future layout up and running.  Most of my collection is postwar lionel but with a fair number of newer models.  I'm looking to see if anyone has made a homemade setup to clean and repair models.  Most of my collection only needs a good cleaning, but there are a number that will require disassembly for cleaning and others needing small repair.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

imageHi Hoopster,

Is this what you’re asking about?  I built it out is parts I found around the house.  The “secret” was the two brass bases that were left over from some outdoor pond lights.  It’s adjustable and is 12” long. My largest engine just fits.  I lay a shop cloth over the foam when I’m using it.  I also need to find some thinner foam.

Hi Hoopster,

It works well for maintenance and cleaning.  As I mentioned, the foam I used is a little too thick. Once I replace it I’m sure it will be even better.  I haven’t really needed the ability to rotate the cradle.  However, it may come in handy some day

If you Google “Build a universal maintenance cradle” the first hit is a CTT article about this topic.  Check it out.
