A few weeks ago, someone e-mailed me saying that he was considering putting a layout in his garage, or thinking about building an 8 x 12 like mine, or maybe some combination of the two….and he asked whether I could share my track plan or show a picture of my setup, something like that.

Anyway, at the time I didn't have any decent photos of the entire structure, so I promised him I would send him something.  Well I either lost the e-mail or misfiled it in some folder somewhere deep in my hard drive where it'll probably never resurface.  So if you're out there and read this, please e-mail me and I'll be glad to show you my pics and describe what I have built.

Thank you in advance

Bobbie, I used 1 x2s.  Cut them to height and then screwed them in from underneath.  It was a pain trying to hold the support pier in place with one hand while screwing it in from underneath as I don't exactly have a large "wingspan."  I was a total novice back then, knew nothing.  I had no idea that there were companies that actually made stuff like bridge supports, elevated straights etc.  I would've gone with professionally made stuff…would've looked much nicer.

But I had bought this book and was eager to try making some of this benchwork, and I got caught up in the open-grid section.  The thought that I could actually make something that would allow train to run above what I had already built at table level was too much!!

Thanks…no, there's nothing sophisticated about my control system.  I only run conventional.  I know I'll probably want to try something more advanced someday, hopefully when i get space to build a larger layout.  My "control panel," such as it is, is a 6-foot metal folding table.

Jay, Chessie, here are some shots from different areas of the layout.  Feel free to e-mail me if you want to know anything specific.

Brian, Alan...thank you for the kind words.  Layouts like yours  are what mine wants to be "when it grows up!!"

Thank you, I appreciate it.  And as for the problem with the 4th photo, guess what?  Look what I happened to pick up at The Big E show up in Springfield last Saturday!
