I'm looking for the Railking RS-285PH Motor for an 0-8-0 locomotive.  A guy in our club has a locomotive that they tried to replace the flywheel on, and it destroyed the motor.  The initial issue was the flywheel tape was bad.  If he had waited, I would have given him the flywheel tape that he needed, but I was too late.   Anyone have one of these sitting around gathering dust?

He tried a motor from another MTH locomotive, but the gear was slightly larger in diameter, and it didn't turn freely.

That appears to be a Mabuchi number. The most common motors used by most of the manufacturers is the RS 385PH. Many types of gears might be installed on this motor.

Best bet is try and get one from MTH for that particular engine. If that doesn't work you will have try and find a motor and swap gears. Not as easy as it might appear as they are a very tight fit and its easy to bend the shaft. BTDT.

The gear is .270" in diameter, the length of the threads is .550", the total length of the gear is 1.020, and the gear pitch appears to be .08" for each rev.

Sadly, the gear is off the shaft, so I don't know what the distance from the motor end was, what I have is sort of a basket case of crushed motor, gear, and flywheel.

I haven't heard back on the exact product number of the locomotive.  The appearance was very similar to the Railking 30-1313-1, but I don't know if that's the actual number.  Reading about the BE-0000099, the size of the gear does seem really close.

John, what's the chances of that 0-8-0 being the same motor as my MTH 0-8-0...I could measure the gear offset from the motor...I'll look mine up today and see...

Apparently in the press trying to put the flywheel back on.

John, The motor in the pic below was purchased from Lionel. I had to remove the gear that was on it to install the gear from the small motor next to it. I will ty and find that gear and see it it matches your description.

BTW I didn't see an RS 285 listed at the Mabuchi web site. What is the shaft diameter of that motor?

The label is partially obscured, so the 2 may be a 3, that part is just a black smear.  I thought it looked more like a 2.  The shaft is .09" in diameter.  Hard to know how long it was, the top of the motor is caved in so it's probably longer now.

I pretty sure it is a 385.  Again that designation is the manufacture of the motor number that tells you the size of the motor, length, winding and poles.  There is actually another 4 numbers that would include voltage and speed, torque rating.

MTH uses a 2 letter and 7 number part number for O.  HO has picked up a few more digits.

The normal can motors are the 365 for RK, 385 for Premier and some steam, and 545 for some steam.  Need MTH number to get the right gear and right style flywheel.

The BE-99 is the correct number for the RK 0-8-0:

BE-0000099TachRS-385PH6.7x26x15.5mm      9x30mmRK

0-6-0; 0-8-0
