"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

Do to size constraints, I'm switching from O gauge to HO.  I'm not real savvy on O gauge and even less on HO...if possible.  I'm looking at 2 options.  I'm not diving too deep into this now so I'm looking at a HO starter set.  I found a Bachmann with DCC that has 2 engines, track, and cars.  There isn't any sound.  I can always get an engine with sound later if I decide to.  I notice that there are even sound cars that I could buy.  I'm also fond of Lionel...I'd like the polar express.  I really like the way the Lionel track works but I don't think it's as cost conscience as EZ track will be...by far.   I've been looking around and I guess the PE can be ran conventional, DCC, app, and Blue Tooth.  Do I have to run Lionel DCC on EZ track?  Can I run it bluetooth on the DCC track?  I'm guessing DCC puts the max volts onto the track and the DCC controller controls the wattage to the train?  Therefore, it would be powered much like Lionel and the wall wart so it looks like you could run it as bluetooth.  Am I way off base on this?  I'm not going to gung ho on ho but am I going/thinking the wrong direction?   thanks, Jeff

If you're looking at Bachmann,  did you consider delving into ON30? It has the size of O gauge but in a smaller footprint,  close to HO . Plus for a start you can utilize HO turnouts and track for price and availability until you can afford narrow gauge track. And Bachmann has both engines that have DCC installed and DCC ready.

+1 on Kato Unitrack.  I have used it in both HO and N scale and it has never failed me.  I've never experienced any derailments using Kato turnouts as well.

If you are looking at a Bachmann starter set with DCC, it would provide an ok starting point, however their EZ Command DCC system does have its limitations.  I would say that you would be better served investing in a better DCC system (NCE, Digitrax, MRC, etc) which you can grow with.

If I were starting today in HO, I would go with Kato Unitrack, choose your own DCC system, and I would select my own locomotives/rolling stock to suit my liking.  Bachmann sound value locomotives can be purchased at several forum sponsors starting around the $100 range.  Not bad at all for a DCC sound equipped ready to run locomotive.  Of course there are far more detailed (and costly) locomotives out there if you aren't on a specific budget.

Best of luck with your decision!

I wish someone would have mentioned this Kato Unitrack sooner.  I just bought several sections of Bachmann Grey EZ-Track.

I mentioned it here on the 4th; although I know I have recommended it before as well. I suspect it's more expensive than EZ-Track, but then...it IS Kato...and (opinion) you can't get any better.

PS: Also, the Unitrack turnouts have a feature that enables you to make both main and turnout tracks either live or selective (not sure I'm using the correct terminology)... just a simple moving of a screw, if I remember correctly...
