Folks,

I am looking for a low cost tablet that I can keep in the train room to use with the DCS wi-if app.  I've seen the previous posts about tablets.  While looking for a low cost tablet I do want one that would be good for this use realizing cheaper does not equate to a decent tablet.

I happened to see a brand called Hipster on the Walmart site.  It runs android 5.0.  I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this brand.

Last question for the tech savvy folks.  If the DCS app works with Android 5.0 on a specific tablet, does that mean it will work on any tablet running android 5.0.

Thanks,

Ed

Hello Ed, I just purchased a 7" tablet from Walmart that comes with the keypad and case for $59.00!! The tablet by itself is $49.00. Make sure that your WIU is upgraded to the latest firmware. here is the links to tablets:

Tablet only:

Hello Ed, These tablets are not high quality, but they are perfect for holding in one hand and running your train. The specs on tablet say that it has 16GB. The tablet comes with 1GB of memory. You have to purchase separate a 16GB card. It cost me $10.00. My tablet had NO problems connecting to WIU and it also loaded all of my engines very quickly. When I went to Google play store to download app, I didn't have to pay for a new copy of app, It downloaded the Standard version of app. I had already paid for the Standard app for my Android phone. so I didn't have to pay for a new copy of app.......................rogerw.

BJR!

I was reading some of the reviews.  There are enough negatives that I will not go the Hipster route.

There have been some recommendations for the RCA.  That also gets some negative reviews but not nearly as much as the Hipster. More positive comments. Considering that and the validation from members that the RCA works, I am going to get that one.  This tablet will have a single use that being running the DCS Wi-if app so I don't need and e tra capability than that.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Ed

Ed, I can tell you from personal experience, there is nothing wrong with this tablet running your trains!! I used it last night on my layout and it works fine!! The display on the tablet isn't very sharp, but you can see the DCS display pretty good. Again, you will not go wrong purchasing the RCA tablet from Walmart...............rogerw.

Rodger,

I have no doubt the RCA will do just fine.  That is what I am going to buy.  All I am waiting on is for me to formulate a semi-palatable explanation to the boss about the absolute necessity for a tablet for the trains.  She is fantantastic with my trains so there will be no problem on that count.

Thanks for the help.

Checked it out and liked what I saw, so I bought one. Works anyway because I was getting tired of running the battery down on my phone running trains with it.
