Malfunctioning train help needed

I had a similar issue that you describe with my Railking C&O "Yellowbelly" a 3 volt PS2 engine. It turned out being a short in the smoke unit. IIRC, replacing the fan motor solved the problem. 

 Well first thing.... go ask the wife if she's mad about anything you did. Then ask your boy if he saw her with any tools out............

 Post on the MTH forum and the guys probably can help you test the unit. From here, I can't see it.

I would first unplug the smoke unit and test the elements for continuity. Should show about 8 ohms.

If that checks out I would put 3 to 5 VDC to the fan motor and see if it runs.

 In times of trouble  a feature reset will usually cure all problems , providing there are no hardware issues.  Menu/Advanced /reset engine /feature reset Worth a shot.

I think the smoke unit is the source of both issues. When I turn it on the static increases. I don't think I have a meter to check the power going to the smoke unit.

Hi Scott,

From your description it is likely a bad fan motor on the smoke unit that is approaching a dead short.  This can happen if a smoke unit gets over loaded with fluid and the fluid eventually leaks into the motor.  DO NOT operate the engine until you get it checked out.  A dead short on the fan motor can take out the board.  A replacement fan motor is less than ten dollars.  A replacement 3 volt board with 5 volt connectors will cost you over $150.

Scott,  The speaker is probably bad also.  They would flake.  So the first thing to do is replace the speaker.  Then run unit with smoke off and see if it functions fine.  G
