If this has already been discussed, I apologize for the duplication.

I was back-and-forth on an e-unit, had everything right again and again, when I finally figured out that I could test the e-unit separately from the motor.

Head's up:   I found the brass loop connected to the plunger was binding on the lower tabs of the rocker portion of the unit.  Dremeled the overlap off and it finally works the way it is supposed to.

I hope this is of some interest to members who are similarly wrestling with e-unit gremlins.

My experience with Marx reverse units has been that they are more susceptible than Lionel e-units to dirt and corrosion.  When one of my Marx reverse units starts acting up, my standard treatment is to douse it with contact cleaner, then put the locomotive on the track and keep cycling the reverse unit to flush away whatever crud is interfering with its action.  Repeat as needed.

Only once have I ever had to disassemble a Marx reverse unit to make it work properly.
