Hi everyone! I recently bought a Marx 81 Monton diesel from an antique shop but it has a cosmetic problem. Someone spray painted the entire loco red! "Big Red" doesn't float my boat. My question is should I repaint it in a different livery or try to strip off the red paint so the Monton litho is showing.

I would try stripping it first, ya never know, you might luck out.

Try stripping off a small area on the pilot to see if the original lithographed paint remains or is removed also.
The original Monon livery was quite detailed.

Maybe let it soak in mineral spirits a day or two...? (Monitor it.) Maybe that will get at the re-paint and not the lithography, if you're lucky...?
BTW, I assume that you mean "Monon"; there was no "Monton".
Or, you could do a fairly realistic Monon paint/lettering (HO size decals would probably do, here) job on this Marx loco. Be a real conversation piece.
my first thought would be that the original paint was probably not in pristine condition for the owner to consider this sort of repaint.
the problem with any repaint as you might guess is that there is practically no detail in this basic shell other than some subtle stamped ridges, most probably included for strengthening. fans, horns, numberboards, grills, pseudo-trucks, etc are all part of the exceptional Marx "trompe-l'oeil" lithograph technique.

Gee, thanks everyone for all the help! I'll have to try that. :-)
Are you sure it was Monon. There were Seaboard versions as well as SP and B&O versions that used this mold weren't there?
The SP and B&O were different stampings and were bigger locos with two separate trucks in the power unit - power truck and leading truck.
This small stamping was Monon, Kansas City Southern, Seaboard, and another?
Be aware that regular rubbing alcohol will remove the original Marx lithography. I do not know what would strip the paint and not affect the lithography.

no, just Monon, KCS & Seaboard.

Thanks guys I knew it was more than just the one option as far as paint on this mold I just forgot what the other ones were.
In England there are modelers who are making paper wrap covers for beat up tin toy trains maybe something like this is a solution.
Ok, so far I have tried mineral spirits but it has not worked. What should I use to get the repaint off?

I at first thought is was a KCS one but I soon found out is was a Monon. I can see the yellow lines and gray paint through some chips in the repaint.

I tried some of my mineral spirits on it, it didn't do anything. I only wiped it though.
Also, this engine had a double reduction motor for some reason. I know these came with single reduction motors and two wheel motors but did any come with a double reduction motor?

all of the FM type diesels w/ a large electric motor i own have this motor...
these diesels were late 1950's production and by then, the use of the single reduction (aka: large gear) motor was almost completely phased out.

Ok everyone, here's where I'm at. I found that Kerosene (the main ingredient to paint thinner) works! I just have to wipe the loco with Kerosene and scratch off the repaint paint. The Kerosene makes it much easier to do so.

The Kerosene process it too slow. I actually have to scrape the paint off and I need to be careful. What solvent should I use to strip the rest of the repaint off without scraping?
