Welcome once again to the show that never ends... Midweek Photos brings you some of the segments of the railroad action across the nation and sometimes around the globe. If you have any interesting views you can share of the real world of railroading, we'd love to have a look.
Last Saturday was National Train Day. Some railroad museums, tourist lines and preservation groups take this as a chance to begin their season, show off their stuff or try something different. With Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, a diesel powered excursion was run to Carbondale, PA on the former Delaware & Hudson route. Very often, mid-May is chilly and you only see buds on the trees and bushes. But this year, trees were mainly full, and pollen filled the air. This route is more of a historic trail than a natural one, but we'll take nature as a scenic improvement
Power for the trip was provided by the Delaware Lackawanna RR. This engine is originally from the Erie Lackawanna, an ALCO C425 built in 1965. When the D-L began operating in Scranton in 1993, this was the first unit re-painted to her Gray Maroon and Yellow colors.
The Pioneer City platform was built in 1995 by a partnership with Carbondale, the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority and the Springwood Group. D&H's passenger station burned down in 1970 or so.
After making the run-around moves, 2461 sat in the sunshine for a while to allow anyone to take photos. Passenger trains don't go to Carbondale often, but with luck, it will be less rare to get pictures of the possible train options that will be there in the future.
On Monday, I had a bit of luck. Traveling on US 11 North in Scranton, I noticed a freight train on my left. 3 CN units on train 931, if I remember correctly. I could not pull out of traffic to get the perfect shot, but aimed the camera out the window. I was expecting a bunch of pictures of either the sky or the road. Happily, I got these three.
Not bad for traveling 50 mph and waiting for passing cars to clear.
Leaving work on Monday, the D-L was still switching cars, and using matched C425s 2451 and 2461. They are the only two painted in this scheme for D-L. The location still in Scranton is Bridge 60 at the Steamtown yard. That's what I have for the week.
If I can request when you post, put a location and a railroad. They aren't always obvious to those of us who don't know your regular haunts. Thanks. See you next week!
