Thank you! And yes he also had me going. 😅

Be very careful with that Sir stuff! Prices may double!
Making good progress now. Handrails are finally going in where I can apply them. The conductors side railings won’t go in until the frame has been sprayed with black. And yes they are a pain to install. 😭
taped the body off and sprayed it this evening. I also finished getting the trucks reassembled. I will be detail painting the trucks and adding a light road grime to them so they don’t shine as much. I will also be doing this to the underbody so it actually looks somewhat used even though they were just delivered.
More updates to follow.

Another decent update. With the Chicago O meet coming up I am kicking it into gear to get this loco finished. I have finally got the Radiators fans placed and attached. I painted the fans an aluminum color as they would have been. After getting most of the handrails in place, I sprayed the first layer of clear coat. The decals went on very well and no film is showing. I was also able to get the rest of the handrails on. Touch up paint, a few more small decals and detail parts and another layer of clear coat and we shall call the body finished.
I will be working on the frame and cab interior next.
Updates to follow.

I'm glad I just found this thread, this thing is coming along great. Amazing job. I stripped a Weaver GP38 too and added some details, but not nearly as much as you. Also, I have the frame with fixed pilots, but considered keeping the "loose" pilots. Just wasn't sure if my 042 curves could handle fixed pilots.
Are you using an airbrush to paint?

Good morning! I appreciate the kind words. This has been on heck of project. I like the realism side of the hobby and try and model to the prototype. The tightest curve on my layout is a 72” and that’s in the yard so I can’t quite tell ya what it will handle. With the later addition of a stand alone switching section I will have some pretty tight curves and will be able to test the limits of the equipment.
I use a Passche double action airbrush for all the painting. The orange is Tru color and is a mixture of 1 part paint, 2 parts MEK. The black is scale coat ll and is mixed 1 to 1 with laquer thinner.

Great project. In the post prior to this one "image not found" is there rather than pictures. Guessing they are not loaded on the OGR Forum? What class will it be in?
Since you can't win if there is only one contest entry in your class be sure to bring an addition piece with just in case you need to make it two entries.
I have 36" radius curves on my layout and can confirm my Weaver Geep (seen in a photo earlier in this thread) takes them just fine, & can pull & push stock round such curves too - longest cars I have are MTH Centerbeams.
I just had to fit a long-shank Kadee (#746 I think) at the front end because of the plow.

I have no idea what happened there. The pictures showed but for some reason over the past week have disappeared. Computers. 🙄
Ha! I learned that last year after I entered None revenue. Fortunately locomotive has never been an issue in the contest. I try and promote it as much as possible. It’s a great way to experiment and work on your skills and also to show to others for a great way of learning.

That is shaping up beautifully. Thanks for sharing.

Could never figure out why they have a class, and just because no one else enters you can't win.
So on the other hand, if there is a class and the same guy enters both pieces there shouldn't be a winner either since there still is no other competition.
Looking forward to the finished product!

I think O72 curves would probably be about the smallest with fixed pilots.

Question. Why the MEK with the paint? I am also going to Chicago and am anxious to meet you

What I have found is the Acetone dries so fast that the paint would hit the model dry and would easily flake off. The MEK is a little slower drying and mixes well with the TRU color paints and sprays much nicer over all. It took some experimenting but seems to work very well. Preperation is also important so a good beed blast would work well in helping the paint adhere better.

Coming down to the wire on this project. Just waiting on a couple of small details and will be adding some detail to the under body but this one is on the home stretch. Hard to believe this started life as a Weaver ultra line “GP38”
And if anyone is wondering, yes...the cutlevers work. 😁

Great project and fine looking model. Wish I had your skills to tackle a project like that.
Final update! Just little details coming together to get this finished. The under body is getting the attention it needs and after will get the black sprayed. Glass in the windows, all weather window, and I’m going to call this ready for Chicago.
Hope many can make it this year!

Looking good James. I'll be searching for it in Chicago.

Where are you going to get your all weather windows? Lionel is making Milwaukee sd40-2s but didn't put all weather windows on the Wisconsin Central sd45s that arrived recently so I'm assuming I'll probably have to fix the sd40-2s myself.

I’m actually going to make it. Unfortunately not all of these were the same so I figured I would take the 20-30 minutes to carve it out of plastic. I will be putting actual glass in it as well.

Hi James,
Looking forward to seeing you and the GP38-2 in a couple of weeks. I saw the pictures you sent to Frank today and the GP38-2 is looking great. Seeing the latest pictures, it is hard to believe it started out as a plastic Weaver model.

I had a few brass windows that I got several years ago. I would send you one or two. They are cut and currently flat waiting to be creased. cbqer@aol.com

Okay, thanks. The sd40-2s are still months away and I'm not yet entirely sure if I want to do it so I may get back to you in the future.
Looks great, James and I'm not a modern era modeler.
Strange model for an E21 era fan Were they used in the consist with Joes in the last year or two of the electrification or is a -38 one of your current rides?

Ha! Isn’t it though. The Milwaukee took delivery of 350-355 (None Dyno) in June of 1973 and then took delivery of remaining 10, 556-565 (Dynos) in August that same year. So close to the end. Though what I have modeled is after it’s accident in the later 70s. So we shall call this a sniglet on the layout. 😅
