I recently got my Lionel Milwaukee Road S-3 #265 back from Lionel, and smoke problems etc. were all fixed, and it smokes better than before. But last night when I wanted to run the engine for a friend, I had different problems. Using TMCC, setting the code for the engine, it fired up, but wouldn't move. Then I shut down the power, re-tried, the engine fired up as if it was in conventional, as I didn't have to touch the TMCC remote to get a response; and the MTH Z4000 transformer was reading about 15 volts at full throttle. The headlight and class lights on the engine seemed to be flickering, and all I had was a continuous ring of the bell. No whistle and no movement. Once in a while the circuit breaker would flash on the Z4000. I tried again and the same results. After a 24 hour rest, off the track, I tried again, with all the same problems. Any ideas? Has the circuit board blown? To test any problems with the TMCC, I fired up my other S-3 all sharing the same power, and it responded as it should in TMCC. Thanks for helping me out again.

You've most likely got a short somewhere. I'd look for a loose wire contacting the frame intermittently, or maybe a wire pinched between the tender shell and the frame. The breaker popping on the Z4K indicates a partial or intermittent short. The short may or may not involve the boards; you've at least got a fighting chance that they are OK. I'd also give Lionel service a call since you just got it back from them. Talk to a tech, not just the service rep who gives out RA numbers.

OK Thanks! It must be in the engine then, as I did put just the tender on the track, powered up, got the whislte to blow and the bell to ring via the TMCC, but the engine was a different story. I'll call a tech when I have the day off, so I can call during the daytime. I might also add, that I did get a little bit of smoke to come out the stack; but also at one time I got a couple more goofy flash codes. Once a four flash (again!!), and once a two flash.
