So far, two responses are sorta close - but not specific enough.

OK Ace, given your latest hint, I'll take Korea. Probably South since the US spent time there. In all honesty, I'm better at geography than I am at steam engines.

That's ballpark. Hint: 42" gauge.

Well, that may help some of the other guys, but I'm good and lost. Fun quiz anyway.

42" gauge suggests New Zealand, and also explains that sort of British look, but they used the centre-buffer and hook coupler. South Africa is my guess, because they used knuckle couplers and also look a bit British too. 

The British look came from companies like the North British Locomotive Works, who exported their products to almost every corner of the old empire.

One last swing, Mongolia!!!

Not there yet! It really threw me. For extra points, also identify the different country where the locos were built.

My vote at 42" gauge is the SAR.  I remember from reaing "The Red Devil and other tales" that many of the south african engines used elephant ear deflectors like the ones shone here.

I forget the title but it's one of Collin Garratt's books. He traveled all over the world to document the last steam operations in many different countries. The photo above was uncaptioned on a title page and I had to look all through the book to learn the identity of the locos.

The mainland China faction really latched onto red wheels and buffers and American designs for their steam locomotives. We've seen so many of those, the Taiwan steamers were much less familiar to the international railfan community.

I'm working up another puzzle for those who might be interested.

This is the mystery part. It looks so North American but it was built in a foreign country which you would not suspect - for export. And then spent its working life in another foreign country far distant. After retirement, it was preserved in a museum far from where it worked.

OK, hard to resist.

Before I Google my brains out, I'll guess a Chinese 4-8-4 built in Great Britain and now kept in a US museum.

Firewood had the closest answer, 2 out of 3. The actual details are:

One of 24 built by Vulcan Foundry (between Liverpool and Manchester, England) in 1935. Hard to believe, it looks American.

Served on Chinese Government Railways until 1981. Steam Locomotive 4-8-4 KF Class ("Confederation Class").

Now preserved in the National Railway Museum in York, England.

Railroad trivia puzzle: Identify an operational steam locomotive over 100 years old.

I don't have all the answers to this question. To qualify, the locomotive must be at least 100 years old (not a replica), be currently operational, or was recently operational and expected to be returned to operation in the foreseeable future. I believe there are some examples on the Strausburg Railroad but I don't know all the details of their current status.
