A pretty esoteric question. I want to load a gondola with canisters. Theoretically, it came with them in 1972. Is there any way to guess what colors the canisters might have been just from the year of issue?
A brief browse through the Evil Auction Site (TM) reveals over a dozen colors but no way to assign them a year of production. I am well aware the query is a long-shot.

Here is a picture of the first Lionel train set we purchased back in the 1972-73 time frame. The set was named “The Allegheny “ and included the gondola with blue canisters. Not exactly what you asked but hopefully helps in your quest.
P.S. Determined that picture is from Christmas 1973, changed dates listed above back one year.

Pics of actual trains--as opposed to catalog--are probably most helpful. The catalogs could be . . . wishful thinking on Lionel's part as much as on our part
