I have early versions of both engines. If I park on one side all the comments about how well or otherwise they have been selectively compressed, my biggest frustration is the horrible bell on top of the boiler and the lack of numberboards.

You don't seem to be able to buy the revised bell and hanger from later versions

Does anyone else share my view? and if so has anyone made modifications to their models?

If you have - what did you do/how did you do it and do you have any pics to share?

I heavily modified my PS-1 Gray MTH RK Challenger. Hated the stubby tender so it got a modified Lionel Vandy tender. Installed EOB/RS; Engineer and Fireman figures and cab glass. Added scale brass train indicator boards and bell. Removed yucky pilot assembly and replaced with a modified Lionel Lionmaster pilot assembly. Repainted black and weathered. Overall it now looks better but the loco is still too tall, MTH did a poor job with compression on this loco, IMHO. Still not a favorite but it runs like a clock...
