Today at the TCA Museum Lionel Anounced they will be doing the 8-door version next, they had a 3-d printed sample, all I can see is I will need a part time job. Detail of the 3-d printed shell was excellent

That is great news. I was hoping that the 8 Door 86'-6" High-cube auto parts boxcars would be made in the 8 door configuration. That means that a Detroit & Toledo Shore Line 86' High-cube Boxcar could be made, in the coming years.

Thanks for posting this!! Love these cars, can't wait to see them. Very cool Pics!
Great to see an actual model.
Andrew
didn't get any other pics, hopefully others did take pictures, these cars will have working eot's
That's good to hear. I have three ATSF's on order. I'm hoping the next run includes some in CNW (either way).
They looked pretty cool!
Peter
Okay, I posted them to my blog.
They are in the second half of this post:
Thanks for uploading those photos, Dave. Very informative. Looks like Lionel is also dumping the fast-angle wheel in favor of a more realistic countour, albeit with an extra wide tread and large flange. Looking forward to the production models hitting the streets this year and the 8-door versions next year.
I think it's so the customers know in advance the doors don't open, so they don't get mad when they get the car and the doors don't open. Opening doors aren't all that useful unless you're going to make a scene of loading a boxcar, but people expect them to open.
Well, I'm wondering about the "unique road numbers each car"
Have we finally achieved a new cost-effective printing technique?....ratcheting, sequential pad printing? Think of the collecting mayhem that will ensue!....The secondary market prices on the first and last cars of a series!.....No more Sheldon-like commentary from people scanning Lionel boxes ("Got it, got it, got it, got it, got it, got it....")....
Hmmmm..... This could be bigger than non-operating doors. Maybe it should be at the TOP of the list, instead of the bottom!
Dave,
Thanks for the link to your photos. I think they look great!
Where does a person place orders for these cars?

I would suggest that you might wish to order them from your LHS, or from one of the forum sponsors.
This a better looking image of the Chicago & North Western 8-door 86'-6" High-Cube Boxcar.
That is the original scheme. This was made in N-Scale by Bluford Shops.

This is all great news. I'm looking forward to these and the previously announced ones. I also don't care if the doors open or not.
Thanks for the update and the photos!
They do look nice, and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished articles.
But.... I'm still puzzled as to why the fact that the doors don't open qualifies as a listed feature?
Non-opening doors = no grossly oversized door guides to detract from the appearance of the scale detailing on the model, so yes, I'd say that's a feature.
Case in point: Weaver's 57' mechanical refrigerator cars have non-operating plug doors & therefore have very realistic looking door guide railings. Now take Lionel's version of the same car that has opening doors, and look at how large the door guides are in comparison.
Thanks, Mike and Dave, for taking pictures for us. I too am OK with cast-in doors.
I plan to buy a couple of the Santa Fe cars, and I'm hopeful in a future run Lionel will offer the Santa Fe car in the later "Quality" scheme with the small herald and "Q" logo.

One time back in Michigan , I was told these cars had to have all doors open when unloading , never moved with doors open , car bodies would buckle , some models have real wavy sides .
Dave and Mike greatly appreciate the photos!
Very much interested in these cars. I have quite a few on order from the initial run in the 4 door version. Definitely can wait for some of the 8 door versions! Definitely interested in the CN, GTW, IC, ICG versions. NS isn't bad either!

Absolutely! Also, no doors vibrating open during operation. Saw the Lionel 57-foot reefer and didn't like the look of the bulky door guides. Don't care for the opening doors on MTH box cars either for the same reason.

Yes, not to mention that the prototype 57' mechanical refrigerator cars have cushion underframes which is reflected on the Weaver models but absent from the Lionel version. The Lionel version is also missing the simulated exhaust cover on the roof over the diesel engine compartment, another feature that Weaver got right.
They have to make the 8 Door High-Cube Boxcar for popular railroads like:
Baltimore & Ohio
Chesapeake & Ohio
Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
Pennsylvania Railroad
Union Pacific
Then they can make:
B&O Chessie System
Chicago & North Western
Detroit & Toledo Shore Line
Illinois Central Gulf
Southern Railway

Hey guys!
Glad you enjoyed seeing the 3-D models at the show. Couple useful tid-bits to assist in the conversation.
Each car will feature our existing 70T rotating Bearing Cap trucks as shown in Mr. Slater's pics.
Each car will feature pads and holes to accommodate scale coupler boxes, but even more each car will include a pair of injection molded draft gear boxes which will extend the scale coupler from the end of the car for a more prototypical feel and to assist scale guys in getting these cars around their curves!
The stirrup steps on the ends of the car will be die-cast for durability I am pretty certain every one of the steps that were 3-D printed were gone in the first 3 hours!
We are really excited to get these cars produced. Glad to hear the reaction to their appearance at York is positive!
Thanks to everyone who swung by the booth at York!

Great Pictures! I am sitting here viewing them and say to myself, self, that guy is wearing a watch a lot like mine!
Duh! I was holding them for I guess Mike and didn't know I would be a hand model on the forums!
Thanks for being a hand model!
Hi Mike
Some questions/comments about these AWESOME cars!
1. I don't want to body mount my scale couplers, I'd much rather be able to mount a scale coupler box on the "cool swinging arm thingy" that allows the 3 rail couplers to move for tight curves. Since these cars aren't fully in production yet, please consider making a part that would allow this.
2. The extended draft gear boxes are a GREAT idea. PLEASE consider offering these for separate sale. I know lots of guys who would want to use these on other freight cars. Nobody makes anything like this for O scale.
3. Road names for the 8 door cars Detroit & Toledo Shore Line, DT&I, SP/Cotton Belt, and GTW again.
3. Lastly, PLEASE offer these cars for sale as single cars. The policy of "only available in a two-pack" is killing me. It forces me to buy more cars than I need need or want and wastes the money I have available to spend on other cars or locomotives.
Thanks SO much for listening to your customers and making these great cars!

Perhaps there will be a few train stores that will sell the boxcars from the GTW, CR, NS 2-packs separately.
If you like to make the density of Grand Trunk Western freight higher, then the 2-Pack for the GTW 86' high-cube boxcars is the way to do it.
Andrew
The Grand Trunk Western 8-Door 86' High-Cube Boxcars have to be the paint scheme version with the Silver Doors.
I would rather get the SSW COTTON BELT SP Scheme on the 4-Door 86' High-Cube Boxcar.
Andrew
3 different numbers per roadname
A different Mike

What I'm seeing is U have to get the two packs of some names and others are only in the full set with the engine, right?
I'd better order some packs soon?
Here is an example of the Southern Pacific 86' High-cube Boxcars with 8-doors.
The SP placement would look better between the doors, instead of on the doors.
Andrew
I would like to see Lionel thoroughly research the road numbers for these as well and not use made-up numbers or numbers used on different series of cars as they've had on other similar high-end cars like their auto carriers.
Yummy, I will take a mixed bakers dozen, B&O, PRR, SP, C&O,Southern, N&W and the
Atchison ,Topeka and the Santa.Fe

"...Rich they are avaliable in 2 packs and single cars"
If you're not buying the set with locomotive, then the NS, GTW and Conrail cars are only available as two-packs. All the other cars (ATSF, Frisco, NYC, e.t.c.) can be purchased as single cars.

Somebody is bound to break-up a few sets.
The Chicago & North Western kept the 8-door 86' High-Cube Box Cars into the 1990's and the employees repainted them.
