So I am thinking about getting one of these...but see complaints about low volume.

I see small 7 watt amps on an auction site for around 19 bucks...

...so am wondering about getting these...getting a power supply for the amp to run on track power...

..but wonder if the output from the sounder will blow the input on the amp...

Thoughts?

The low sound is really due to the anemic speaker that comes with the board. All Electronics sells a 50mm 4 ohm speaker that really increases the volume [due to the bigger magnet on the speaker as well as the bigger surface area itself]. Most O gauge trains will accommodate the 50mm[2"]- certainly MTH trains use this in their fuel tanks as well as some Atlas O applications.

Your question you need to ask is what loco are you using this for? Are there accommodations for a sound unit or will you have to make some holes in the frame? and how loud do you need it?

For me I install them in dummy units. Certainly the sound will not be louder than the oem lead unit but if I place my ear trackside, I will hear sound both from the powered and dummy units.
