On Wednesday, June 3rd the 6th and 7th car of a 10 car R-179 train separated while in revenue service. The MTA then announced that they are removing all of the R-179 cars from service. This means that the R-32s that were being held in reserve will once again be put back in service in the next few days as the MTA announced that starting next week they will be resuming full subway service throughout the system.

Did the cars uncouple by themselves or did one suffer a break in the structure?  I am not well-informed on the apparent woes of these cars.

UPDATE:  I did an internet search and found, " On June 3, 2020, a set of 5-car R179s on the A train had its link bar break in service at Chambers Street station, causing the consist to be split into two. The entire fleet was subsequently pulled from service."

So, are these cars permanently coupled in sets?  All I know about the subway is how to ride it.
