MTH 2017-V2 Catalog, page 110 - New Jersey Transit ALP-46.
Why is this model 1:43 scale? I believe it is the only model in the catalog in this scale. If I am not mistaken, 1:43 is the O-Scale ratio more common in Europe, and while the real engine was built in Kassel, Germany for New Jersey Transit, the model will likely share the rails with 1:48 scale trains here in the USA.
I wonder if the 1:43 train will look "too big for its size".

It's 1:43 because MTH is using many of the same parts for the European electric engine.
Are there other popular brand (Lionel, MTH, Atlas, etc,) O-Gauge 1:43 models?
Does anyone run 1:43 models along with the 1:48 models? Do they look OK or is the scale difference noticeable?

Most European prototypes are physically smaller than their US counterparts, so the visual difference is negligible.

I had always wondered this myself. I assumed it was because MTH was trying to make its models proportional to the existing market. In other words, if you were a European train enthusiast, all the trains you owned on 0 gauge would have been 1:43.
