Good Afternoon,

May I have your suggestions where I might find 2 replacement speakers w/harness and clip or an alternate (Amazon?)  for a MTH RailKing 2002 PS2  Product # 30-2292-1 (https://mthtrains.com/30-2292-1) . Why two speakers  (my son has same train set & his speaker is going bad also) Present speaker (picture below) is crackling-staticky very little sound when turned up to high sound. No particles or dust ...; I took it into a train shop they think it is the speaker but do not do maintenance, fix nor know where to find any speakers. Also may I have your suggestions on how to swap this out i.e. tools needed, things to watch out for ,,,, basic steps as I  am mechanically challenged with small parts.

Thank you for your time and support.

Sincerely,

Steven Widmer

Unfortunately 16 ohm, 50mm diameter speakers aren't available from MTH, the closest match I could find anywhere was here on ebay, but you have to find someone to solder the original wiring and connector to the new speaker.

The seller seems to know what they're talking about, but no guarantee it will fit or work for your engine.

Hopefully someone else on the forum posts a better solution.

Also, I assume when you say "Present speaker (picture below) is crackling-staticky very little sound when turned up to high sound."  you mean you turned up the volume with the manual control ? ( square blue potentiometer on the bottom of the engine, underneath a power truck, but near the speaker )  page 5 of manual below.

Thank you for your reply and the manual.

Yes I was talking about the ( square blue potentiometer on the bottom of the engine, underneath a power truck, but near the speaker )

I’ve installed about 50 of those speakers.  They don’t have the wattage rating of the original, but they work, but sound a little tinny.  There aren’t many alternatives.

Jon G: Would this speaker from Amazon (below) work?

Found in a 2015 Forum search:

Florida Nativefl  Living in Florida with the high humidity I find the paper speakers to fail far to often.......  here is a good replacement for the 2 inch size common to many MTH engines,  not all unfortunately as it works very well. O Gauge Forum Thread https://ogrforum.com/...-speaker-replacement

MTH 5v PS2.0 speaker replacement

Per the iOhms at this size and wattage output does not matter at all.........

Polypropylene (plastic) design has held up much longer than the paper,  been using these for 3 years now.  No more failures....

Amazon link,  buy them in volume and they are pretty cheap,  less than $4 each:  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IK...oliid=I13ZJ3N9TPZHU8  or copy n paste https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I...oliid=I13ZJ3N9TPZHU8

Thanks for your time and consideration.

I went to an electronics search engine and found some quality German speakers:  16 ohm, 50mm, 1 watt nominal ( 2 watt max )

https://octopart.com/k+50+fl+-...isaton-89142496?r=sp

The frequency response ( download data sheet ) is pretty flat from 500 Hz to 5000 Hz so it should sound good in the diesel rumble - horn frequency range, it might sound a bit bright / harsh for steam hiss. The only disadvantage is it has solder pads instead of the loop terminals the other speakers have.

Wow! Thank you for taking the time to locate an alternate speaker.

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I apologize for my late reply . A friend in our Farmington Train club recently replaced my damaged horn with the Visaton  K 50 FL - 16 ohm (https://octopart.com/k+50+fl+-...isaton-89142496?r=sp) that was recommended by JET. My friend and I agree it is a better sounding horn than the original.

Again, I thank each of you for your replies and apologize for the delay in getting back to you. I am busier in retirement than when I was working.

Thank you all for your time, energy and hard work.

Sincerely,

Steven Widmer
