The smoke unit in this locomotive stopped working after I replaced the smoke unit motor. The original motor seemed to not be working well. So I decided to replace it with a new MTH OEM smoke unit motor. Now the motor doesn’t work at all. I bench test the new motor and it works fine. But when installed in the locomotive it doesn’t work. Could it be something on the board that isn’t working? Thank you in advance for any help!!

Possibly the board, but I would first check for broken smoke unit circuit board traces or a broken wire/loose connection in the wire harness. A cold solder joint could also be the culprit. Try checking the continuity of each wire with a multimeter; any open circuit readings would be the point of failure.

John , thank you for the help. It does look like it is my board. Something on there that controls the smoke fan motor. Can they be repaired? Maybe, but requires fine surface mount soldering skills.

Or is it just a straight replacement? Yes, for many folks without the soldering skills and tools, or worse they damage the board repairing it or it just cannot be repaired.

They are not inexpensive when purchased new. Seems like everything else is working as it should with the locomotive.
