mth 44 tone switcher

I have a friend, kind a goof that got this on eBay it runs great but stops immediately on lionell o 72 switches. no proof of recent so i think he is screwed it runs fine on my o 72 MTh switches is there any way to put a capacitor in this thing he doesn't want to send it back
