It sounds like a proto 1 engine. If the battery is charged, raise the power to about 8Volts pause, then press the direction button.

Ok how do I recharge the battery?
Since you bought a 20+ year old set of PS/1 locomotives, the very FIRST thing to do is to replace the old 9V battery! Most any quality 7 cell NiMh 9V battery will do the trick. Do that before you try to run it again.

Depending on how old the set is (you didn't provide the MTH item number), your best bet is to remove the battery and replace it with a NEW, fully charged one.
Thanks for all the help I replaced the battery with a new eveready 9 volt made all the difference in the world. Runs good idle and reve up real good still can't get the horn or bell to work. Will work on them later once again thanks everyone.
