I have the MTH Amtrak Genesis unit #20-20301-1 in Phase III anniversary paint scheme. Recently, the smoke unit stopped working in that the smoke oozes out the bottom and side vents. I would guess that this is because the smoke unit is working, but the smoke fan is not.

What I'm curious about is whether anyone has pulled off the shell of a MTH Genesis. If so is there anything I should be careful about or any tricks you can share to make it go easier?

Also, is it that involved to replace the smoke fan? Is it a plug type connection or is there cutting of wires and soldering needed? Any tips here would be helpful as well.

Thanks!

Pulling a genesis shell is about as easy as it gets. 6 screws, 2 in the back, 2 just behind the front truck and 2 in the middle, that go through the fuel tank casting.

Lift from the back and tilt it off the nose. All the lights but the markers are attached to the floor of it. Lots of room to mess around in there. To pull the smoke unit out, you'll need to take the fuel tank off, 4 screws (one in each corner), and you'll reveal the 2 screws holding in the smoke unit.

I second the suggestion to blow down the stack, it might just be bubbled or flooded.  If you turn off the sound, you should be able to hear the fan running or not. Even if the fan isn't running, the smoke would wisp out the stack (path of least resistance), so I think its probably obstructed in some way.
