I recently bought one of these to compare to my Lionel version.
A lot less expensive and a lot less than what the original owner paid TAS to upgrade.
It is my only MTH locomotive.

It has the UCUB and also a QS-3000.
Extra pin connector for the smoke control and an added back up light.

Upgraded on 12/01/1999.

With the exception of a few minor bugs.
Foam tape separated from tender wall  in shipping and one of the backup light wires separated from tender. Easy fix because it was the only terminal screw that was tightened and did not have a wire.
Boards were well insulated with electrical tape so I do not think anything shorted.

I was surprised to see No battery connector for those times when the train hits a dead spot. And that the TAS tech just taped the ground strip to the tender with black electrical tape that was releasing.
Have original mth protosounds manual (not really useful except for parts schematic), lots of QSI guides, manuals, Cab-1 conventional instructions, QSI guide for installing QS-3000 on TAS UCUB.

No instructions from TAS on setting up or running the TMCC upgrade.
Not all that intuitive either.
Have correct engine ID, and runs.
Whistle and horn are quiet and tinny. No potentiometer on tender . And does not seem to respond to normal Cab 1 volume commands. Whistle, horn, smoke on/off work fine and Aux 2 ( I think). Turns off rear    Back up light inconsistently.

Chuff works but drops out on dirty track sections.

Random sounds during neutral but can not  seem to figure out how to activate all the so called " realistic" (which I doubt anyway, unless I at least upgrade the original TAS speaker) sounds described in the lengthy QS-3000 manual.

The original owner said he "tested" and everything worked, but these days on E-bay, that is right up there with "the check is in the mail" and a few others.

Anyone with experience/ knowledge of this technology who may help me out.

My  older "Trainsounds" and "Railsounds" conventional tenders puts this to shame right now.
Thanks
FMH

Hi John, I have looked your TAS manuals before. It seems that my loco was a whistle only version and that MTH shipped a combination manual for both whistle only and Protosounds. So TAS installed a QS-3000. Soundboard By QSI. Your TAS manuals covers everything but. So I guess what I really need is info on how to get ( if possible) full functionality of the QSI soundboard when installed on a TAS Universal TMCC board. I think I can figure out how to do it in conventional mode but would then need to also figure out how to set the TAS board to conventional and I really have no desire or need to do that. And thanks for uploading your manuals. Maybe someone else has the TAS instructions that I need. FRED Thanks
Hi John, I have that guide also. All 158 pages. Paper copy. And it talks about all the features. And it ends with running with Can-1 and Powermasters. Never addresses TMCC. TAS must of only did this for a very short while. Board sits on top of universal Board with pin extenders. It does talk about using a battery however. No such connector on my setup. Fred.
Hi John, I am slowly figuring this out. Getting a good ground really improved the sound. And for 1999 technology this QS-3000 actually does a lot more than any of my Lionel TMCC Railsounds. Water refill, coal loading , maintenance and lubrication, engine shut down. All with crew talk integrated into different operations. Still a few more that I have not tested. Pull cord emergency stop, water scoop, passenger and freight station stops and Doppler effect run by. And the MTH camelback is starting to grow on me. Not quite as detailed as the Lionel version, And the steady fan driven smoke is a lot like my K-line Plymouths but a lot more with only an on/off switch. And I am surprised that there is not an engineer driving this thing. LOL.
I think I need a small interface board. Some of the TAS manuals say you do not need a battery for TMCC because of the constant 18vac but unless there is an on board capacitor to smooth out the dirty track spots than I think a battery might be nice. The QS- 3000 has a very nice shutdown sequence. But it has to be run before track power is turned off.
From what I can find on the Scaled TinRail website. ( not sure if they are still in business.) They have a lot of documentation on the QSI products. Andalusia have had NOS inventory. The charging circuit seems to be on a small board that sandwiched between the top board (,Railsounds, QSI, etc) and the bottom board (TMCC, UCUB, electronic e-unit). Not sure where to hook up battery otherwise. If I knew, I could probably use a 9 volt alkaline. I use batteries in all my Lionel and K-Line TMCC. Steam engines because I like the shutdown sounds when I shut off track power.
Hi John, I found the only clear picture. The other website talks about aftermarket versions but no photos. On page 129 appendix 4 of the QS-3000 user guide is a picture of the board. It is called a Ps-1c board. On page 133 appendix 5 they talk about why running without a battery is possible but not recommended. But this may be pre TMCC.
