MTH: CSX Safety Train

Neat set. MTH sets like that are a really good value too, in addition to being very nice sets. I got my first Premier set last year, very nice. There was an article in a recent Trains magazine about the guy that got all the safety train stuff started and put together and got the rail roads to buy in to it all and donate cars and even engines to pull them with. It's a pretty big operation now. Nice MTH is offering the trains for us, they have some very nice stuff these days.

 

Interesting idea about having both RK and Premier offerings of the same items in the same catalog. Might cut sown on sales some though? For me, last year I would have ordered the Premier version of an engine I got in RK Scale because I didn't know if or when the Premier version would ever be offered in my road name. Then the very next catalog had the Premier version in my road name, but I had already bought the RK Scale version. Oh well...so it goes, the RK scale version is pretty nice and the sounds are right up there with the best I have from MTH, could even be the best one I have.

What duties does a safety train perform?

They use it to train trackside communities in case there is an accident with the Bakken oil trains.

I really like this set! Just wondering, what do they use the passenger car for?

A very unique train, had not seen it around Ohio.

It's a class room for part of the safety training. They also teach first responders about the train cars, their parts, valves, openings etc.

Nice to have a first on your list.

FYI, I think Lionel's Wordpress blog did an article on safety trains and the various training  cars and accident scenarios that was quite good.  Tried to find it but had no luck ...

On that site, click on "Mission Statement" in the left column.  There you will see an inside view of the passenger car...pretty much a large conference table and chairs fill the area.  It serves as a mobile classroom.

I agree...unique.  I've seen a few videos of the train travelling through Fostoria, Berea...and I believe it was Willard as well.  All headed by the Spirit of West Springfield(3099) as in MTH's set.

This is a pic of Dome Car 1...seen in the video above.  Would be neat to try to model one to add to the upcoming MTH set...

The car wouldn't have to be exact, but give the idea of the prototype.

 

I too was immediately struck by this when I saw the catalog.  Seriously thinking of ordering it....if for no other reason than the unique engine.  I wonder though whether this "set" will actually come in a set box or is it going to be like the  CSX intermodal set and just come in a shipping carton.

        Good question, Mike.  I just pre-ordered one if these.  And it would be nice to have a set box, but those days may be behind us now.  Even the Lionel Pocahontas passenger set came in plain shipping cartons.   I didn't order one, but a good bell-weather will be the Lionel M1A coal set.  I think that's the next premium set due out next.  Fancy set box? Or just items packed in a brown shipping carton?

I'm hoping for a set box.  We'll see.  Either way, it will be a great train to run.
