Unlike the TIU, the DCS Remote has been pretty much unchanged from the very beginning. The only noticeable change has been that several years ago the thumbwheel was changed to one with coarser grooves. If there were any "under the hood" changes, they went unreported.

Just update the remote's (and TIU's) software to DCS 6.,1 and you'll be good to go with the latest and best DCS software ever.

It is possible that the screen lighting was improved.  My oldest (original issue) remote has lighting only at screen bottom; my other 3 have full lighting.  Incidentally, the original issue remote runs with the latest software, just fine.  As Joe points out, they are durable.  My grandchildren tested their durability on concrete floors several times (until I added lanyards).
