MTH DD1 issues

I bought a Pennsy DD1 about a month ago, and it worked fine until I tried to run it yesterday. The motor in the rear unit keeps stalling and causing the rear unit to just get dragged along by the lead unit. I took both units apart and couldn't find any problems. While testing the locomotive without the shells, the sound starting cutting out. Could this be a problem with the cable that connects the two units?
