I just received what appears to be a never B4 run MTH 0-8-0. In reading the instructions, it sounds as if this engine has some sort of 3 volt "AA" sized looking special rechargeable battery. I recall many comments about 3V vs 5V circuit boards. Is this engine using the 3V board? Is there anything I need to worry about before running this engine? I do have an MTH charger and can charge the battery via this charger, before I even put it on the track. Thanks in advance for your explanations as I hate to ruin the electronics. Merry Christmas to all!!

If it is a AA style battery, then it has the 3v board. Running it with the battery dead will do nothing to harm the engine, it will just make it so any programming changes you make aren't saved. So if you're using the DCS system, keep that in mind. Also, the battery will charge itself while you run the engine.
Thanks Doug. Now that the Christmas holiday is over, I will try and run my new acquisition.
Happy New Year to you!!
I own the same engine. It's a little gem. Use an MTH charger to charge the battery or replace it altogether with a 3 volt BCR2 unit. With the BCR unit you basically convert your engine from Proto-2 to Proto-3. You will never have to change batteries again. You can find their website on Google by going to J&W Electronics. You won't regret it. Enjoy that beautiful little powerhouse.
Thanks for your reply. Sounds like I will enjoy the engine once I get it on the layout. Thanks for your insights and suggestions.

It doesn't really convert it to PS-3. PS-3 is much more than a supercap. The BCR does eliminate the need for a battery. G
