Hi all, i am new to this forum so please bear with me if i do anything that is not correct. I would like your opinion. I saw an mth dreyfuss protosound 1 for sale on ebay from a known vendor of trains that i have purchased from before. They listed it as c-9 factory new and as is condition. They are asking 239 and they told me in an email that they do not test proto 1 engines. Am i taking a big chance by buying this with only a 60 dollar discount from msrp or do you think that this loco would work if i replaced the battery with a new one or a bcr replacement. All input would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Truthfully, for a 20 year old $299 MSRP locomotive, the absolute most I'd pay is around $140-150, it's simply not worth $239.
I agree with GRJ, its only a ~20% off for a 20 year old engine.
Just my two cents.
Bid with two options in mind, upgrade to proto 3 or upgrade to TMCC from www.Electricrr.com Proto sound 1 is very unreliable. I buy them once in a while with the idea of converting them to TMCC. So I price them accordingly and if it's going over that I don't. You have to decide is it worth it to you to buy and upgrade. GRJ can give you an idea of the cost to upgrade to proto 2 or 3 I believe.
The seller is trainz.com. It is a buy it now they will not budge on the price. This is something that they had aquired from mth since the ceo is retiring. I don't know how these pieces are not made available to the general public. As for the k-line where can i find one. Thanks again for the quick replies i greatly appreciate it.

Trainz has one there too. Their prices are very high lately. In fact deals are hard to come by recently. Be patient, maybe try the wanted to buy section of this forum.

As the owner of many Proto 1 engines, I would say to pass. The price is high, plus the system may be scrambled. Add to the price the cost of a BCR to replace the battery. This should be installed BEFORE the engine is powered up.
