MTH E-8 shorts out when attaching wire

Remove the shells and trace the wires back from the tether, looking for bare spots.

That’s is just one scenario. I am sure some more educated members will chime in. I am no expert, but I try to help when I can. 

post any findings you may come across. Hopefully you can find the issue.

The short is going to be in the dummy. If the powered unit runs fine without it then Pull the shell off the dummy and look at the places where the tether is held down (usually on top of the truck), sometimes to the top of the frame inside, and see if it looks pinched. You will probably need an ohmmeter to figure out which wire is bad, because the wire break is going to be on one of the wires inside the black jacket. 

Are you sure the dummy goes to that engine?  Not a mixed set of PS-1 and newer?  If the correct dummy, as mentioned most likely the dummy at issue.  Probably coupler related to cause the hum and shutdown.  G

Yea, it's the correct dummy and makes sense that it would be the coupler...let me troubleshoot, thanks.
