MTH E-8 warm/hot

I had a short running session tonight with my ACL E-8......I thought I had a sense of a very faint burning smell.... as it turns out the middle of my E-8 was very warm....the front cab and rear were room temperature...just the middle and a very faint smell of burn. Never noticed that before. Now I did have a couple of derailments that caused a short that I quickly fixed.

Would the shorts have caused that or is there a more underlying problem?

any thoughts?

Smoke unit location? Check it. Is it drawing excess current on track? Hard to say especially if the engine features all work. G
