MTH Empire Express PS3 conventional running - lights flashing / garbled sound

I went to set up my MTH PS3 Empire Express 4-4-0 around the tree running off conventional power / no DCS. I powered it up and the headlight and cab light are flashing and when I try to move it forward the sound is all garbled. Any ideas? I tried changing the track polarity, same thing.
