Although I prefer a dedicated remote (sounds like a recurring theme), I have some Amazon Fire tablets which were purchased on sale for $40-50 that are used for the DCS wi-fi app.  They seem to be a good compromise size-wise - phone is too small.  There's a bit of work involved with adding an app from the Google store, but I have no issues with ads or other garbage.

I haven't used them for Lionel apps yet, but hopeful that they will work.  Amazon now has a generic Android tablet for under $35 - I have no idea regarding quality.  The clearance MOTO G for $19 mentioned above sounds like a steal, but I wouldn't hold my breath for finding one.

Following this thread with interest, as I doubt we'll see the development of any more dedicated remotes.

One big drawback I have found is that since I'm using an old phone, I don't leave it turned on all the time, or the battery dies and I have to charge it for a while before I can turn it on. Maybe I'm just too darn impatient but I find it to be a PITA to wait.

Thoughts?

Mods- feel free to move from this forum if necessary.

I thought I wanted a remote when I switched to Blunami.  So, I played around with a gaming controller, and it worked blue toothed to the ipad.

Then I gave up due to the simplicity of the Smart Device and I was sure I wanted a dedicated train smart device.

Then I gave up on that and I use my everyday phone.  I never have to look for it.  It's always in my pocket and always charged.  Works just fine for me.
