Hi E-Joe,

Back in Aug last year you posted a couple of images of the MTH F40PH. I have one of these that is currently in CARR colours, is a un[powered unit and 3 rail. I'm intending to convert it to 2 rail, repaint it in Amtrak livery and power it - nothing like a challenge!

Is there any chance you can share a couple of images of the back end so I can see how they have attached the rear headstock. The Front end I think I've got nailed from your previous images.

Thanks in advance,

Kind Regards

Well?? You caught me at a really bad time. Although I have 2 new drains in my 2nd floor laundry room, when our washer overflowed (again), all the water seemed to be directed at my basement work bench!

Who ever designed the overflow tray needs to be shot. The undersized 1" drain tube, has roughly less than a 1/2" hole thru the fitting. That clogged up immediately. It could never keep up with the volume of water. The second 2" floor drain I installed in the corner for better looks, stayed high and dry. So maybe I need to be shot too?

Anyways here's a couple of quick pics. Let me know what exactly you need and I'll take more.

Hi my humble apologies, yes headstock = pilot.

Isn't the English language a wonderful thing, of course in NZ pilots fly aircraft - I think they might do so in the US too :-) and then there's cars vs wagons/trucks vs bogies/switching vs shunting and the list goes on, rail does = rail though!

And thanks, your images are exactly what I was after. Looking at the images I'm gathering there is a spacer between the pilot and the chassis at the front (from your earlier images) but the rear one appears to be a single piece.

Could you please confirm that there is a spacer at the front and is so would it be possible if you get a chance to measure the thickness of the spacer and height of both pilots.

On the unpowered version I have both pilots are 19mm high without spacers.

Thanks, really appreciated and sorry to hear about the flooding, was anything damaged?

As I work through the conversion, I'll post some images here.

Rgds Brent

No spacer. The pilots are both full size, front and rear. They are taller than the 3 rail versions.

I did not remove them. So I'm estimating their height. The front looks around 28 mm where the rear one is more like 26.5 mm? They go up past the shell's edge too.

I would look at the real ones and estimate where the coupler should be and how high the first step should be off the ground. I take that into consideration and also if I can make each step even in height. Than I make an appropriate height shim for the 3 rail pilots.

Brent,

Considering that flying has only been around since the early 1900's, the term pilot predates that by a bunch!

Definition of pilot

1 a : one employed to steer a ship : helmsman
b : a person who is qualified and usually licensed to conduct a ship into and out of a port or in specified waters
c : a person who flies or is qualified to fly an aircraft or spacecraft

There were people steering boats and pilots (the part, that is) on trains long before anyone took up flying!

Cheers,

Simon
